30 Days of Honesty (and one dare) - Day 1

Day 01 — The one thing that it seems like everyone else on the planet is into but I just cannot stand is…

The one thing that it seems like everyone else on the planet is into but I just cannot stand is pleasant conversation with strangers.

Let's not, please.

I'm not exactly unfriendly - I just prefer to be the one to seek out my conversations.  I'm sweet, and pleasant, and downright hilarious - unless I don't know you, in which case I am awkward and brusque (with annoyed undertones).  And I don't like feeling obligated to talk just to fill space.  I delight in silence, honestly.  Please don't think you need to fill it up with mindless chatter.  I will go out of my way to avoid human interaction, in hopes that I won't have to feign interest in someone's attempt to relate to my life.  Self checkouts at the grocery store were made for people like me.

I suppose this is something I should work on.  My toddler is a social butterfly, and I'd kind of hate to see him turn into an angry little misanthrope like his mama.

The complete list of everyone participating (as far Tom Baker knows): Cherlyn Cochrane, Aurathena, TheFerkel, A Single Parent’s Life, Lovelylici1986, Prysmatique, AnonymousBurn, Caroline, Koi, Sylvia Garza, Mariana, Everything L&L, Nenskei, MyNakedBokkieBluefiadiarries, VeehCirra, Princesa Musang, DLonelyStar, TemptingSweets99, and LJ. 2. Lol. I do feel like this sometimes. Where strangers think I am snob. :)

    1. I do feel badly about that part. I'm not a snob, I don't think I'm better than anyone, I'm just socially awkward and prefer not to force the issue...

  3. Haha well, to each their own :). Not everyone has to enjoy small-talk. I do, but all my jobs have been customer service related, so I had no choice but to like it. But sometimes I also just want to day dream, so I can relate :)

    1. I think part of this for me is that my jobs ARE customer-service oriented. I spend so much time all day exchanging pleasantries with customers that I feel like my time should be my own.

  4. You know the older I get, the more I realize that I don't have to talk to everyone I come in contact with. I'm a friendly person and can be nice when I want to. But there are times when I just don't feel like talking to anyone while I'm out doing my errands.

  5. Caroline, I am quite the opposite even online but I do understand how you feel. Sometimes you just want to keep to yourself - understood!

    1. I should take a page from your book though, Tom. As I said, my son is a little social butterfly, and I would hate to crush that part of him!

  6. LOL Caroline!
Tho in my case, it depends how the stranger approach me! If I find him/her rude or unpleasant the way s/he talks to me then, I'll find a way to drift my way!

    1. That's a good compromise - drift away from the unpleasant people while giving the others a chance...

    1. Hmm, interesting thought. Maybe if I were better at it - I wouldn't hate it so much!

  8. Honesty at it's best.

Yup. Totally agree. There are just people out there I don't really want to talk to either. Not only strangers, but also people I know. People who aren't my friends or "enemies" just people I have very little in common with or people who just don't have the same sense of humor as me. I don't want to have to go through 20 topics trying to find a common ground and I don't want to have to deal with super immature jokes/have to explain mine. What's wrong with a nod or a wave?

That being said I'm SUPER social and outgoing when I want to be. It's a little weird. I'm just a really extroverted introvert I guess...

  9. I totally agree with you. My worst time is in the bus and I don't feel like talking to someone seated next to me. And they want to talk. I once feigned I had hearing problems lol
